CORZAN™ CPVC INDUSTRIAL SYSTEMS PROVE SUPERIOR TO
OTHER NON-METALLIC ALTERNATIVES FOR FIRE RESISTANCE

• Flame spread /smoke development ratings below standard limits
• High flash-ignition temperature of 900°F (482°C)
• Limiting oxygen index of 60 percent for quick flame nullification
• Low heat of combustion at 7,700 BTU/lb.
• Achieved the highest UL 94 rating available at V0, 5VB and 5VA
• Lower installation, retrofit and maintenance costs

CLEVELAND, OH – Corzan™ Industrial Systems comprised of durable chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) pipe, sheet, duct, fittings and valves, deliver flame spread and smoke performance superior to conventional non-metallic systems, providing better control of fire-related loss in industrial facilities. With a flash-ignition temperature of 900°F (482°C) and an excellent balance of properties related to strength and chemical resistance, Corzan® CPVC is ideal for installations of fire-safe systems in a broad range of applications.

Corzan CPVC inherently exhibits outstanding fire performance characteristics in terms of limited flame propagation and low smoke generation. Industry performance standards require that materials demonstrate flame spread of 25 or less and smoke development of 450 or less. Independent testing by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI®) found Corzan CPVC to be significantly below standard limits. SwRI is an independent, nonprofit, applied engineering and physical sciences research and development organization.

Materials are also rated by their flash ignition temperature, which is the lowest temperature at which sufficient combustible gas is present to be ignited by a small external flame. While many ordinary combustibles ignite at 500°F (260°C) or less, Corzan CPVC has a high flash ignition temperature of 900°F (482°C). Moreover, CPVC has a limiting oxygen index of 60, which means that there is not enough oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere to sustain burning.

Corzan CPVC also proved superior to conventional non-metallic systems when comparing heat of combustion levels. Materials with a high heat of combustion generate more heat, allowing the burning process to become self-sustaining. When compared to conventional materials, Corzan CPVC has a significantly lower heat of combustion at 7,700 BTU/lb. In addition, Corzan CPVC has been evaluated for flammability in accordance with UL 94, which measures a material’s resistance to burning, dripping, glow emission and burn through. Corzan CPVC achieved the highest rating available within the scope of this test at V0, 5VB and 5VA.

Additional properties enhance versatility
In addition to its superior fire resistance properties, Corzan CPVC offers manufacturers corrosion resistance, mechanical strength and excellent life cycle economics that are superior to both non-metallic and stainless-steel or carbon-steel alternatives. For more than 40 years, a full line of process components made from CPVC has allowed engineers to design systems with longer service life, lower maintenance, improved process utilization and greater cost efficiency when compared to traditional materials.

Corzan CPVC pipe and fittings demonstrate superior resistance to internal and external corrosion and, unlike metallic systems, will never pit or scale. In addition, Corzan CPVC is inert to most mineral acids, bases, salts and aliphatic hydrocarbons and compares favorably to other non-metals in these chemical environments. CPVC piping is also lightweight, offering easy installation and maintenance. Since the systems are installed by solvent cementing, flanging or threading, installation and retrofit costs are lower, as are maintenance costs, when compared to engineered metallic systems.

This combination of features makes Corzan CPVC an ideal alternative to conventional systems in such industries as metal finishing, pulp and paper, water and waste treatment, chemical processing, semiconductor and chlor-alkali.

“In virtually every industry today, manufacturers are looking for more cost-effective operations without sacrificing performance,” says Rocco Mango, Corzan CPVC Business Manager. “The savings achieved by using Corzan CPVC can be documented from beginning to end: lower material costs, lower installation costs, and lower retrofit and overall maintenance costs. This combination of features makes Corzan CPVC the preferred material for many industrial applications.”

A complete product portfolio
Corzan CPVC is available in a complete line of process components, including pipe and fittings, sheet, valves, pumps, strainers, filters, ducting, storage tanks, fume scrubbers, tower packing and process vessels.

The pipes are available in different sizes, ranging from ¼ to 16 inches (6mm – 400mm) iron pipe size (IPS) dimensions in schedule 40 and 80 piping systems. The newly introduced 14- (350mm) and 16-inch (400 mm) diameter pipes were developed to meet large volume needs to offer a complete system solution. Corzan CPVC sheet and ductwork are also available in a wide range of sizes to meet various application requirements.
