Factory Mutual (FM)

Companies involved in the computer chip manufacturing business utilize wet benches (plastic or stainless steel workstations upon which computer chips are manufactured) in their manufacturing process. FM Approvals was asked to help them analyze and screen appropriate engineered plastics candidates. FM has developed revolutionary clean room materials testing technology, the Flammability Test Apparatus, which determines which engineered plastic materials can best reduce property loss in the event of a fire.

The FM Clean Room Materials Flammability Test Protocol (Class 4910) contains the method for conducting tests. Wet bench manufacturers and users can apply the clean room protocol to develop plastic materials and equipment capable of resisting fire, emitting little if any smoke, and producing little if any corrosive by-products.
